UN BALLO IN MASCHERA
“A story that is beautiful, original, interesting, with wonderful situations, and impassioned: passions above all!”, Giuseppe Verdi demanded of his librettist Antonio Somma in a now famous letter. After labour-intensive years “in the galleys”, Verdi, now artistically and finally secure, found that beautiful and impassioned story in historical events: the assassination of Swedish King Gustav III. Although several attempts had been made to present the story on the opera stage, with Verdi it achieved musical immortality, which, despite the chaos caused by censorship and revisions at the time, started at the world premi.re in Rome in 1859. Un ballo in maschera has been on the schedule at the opera house on the Ring some 600 times to date, making it one of the great box office draws in Verdi’s repertoire!
